New Review: Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep
October 27, 2001 (6:06 PM) ( link )

ADDED a review for Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep. Quite a fun book—though it wasn't as mind-bogglingly good as I remembered. If I recall correctly, the reason I used to think it was so fabulous was that I wasn't expecting much out of it and ended up being highly entertained. Now, with my expectations so high, it didn't seem quite so good; but it's still a fun read, and highly recommended. Next up, a shorter book: Kate Wilhelm's Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang.

UPDATE (11:00 p.m. EST): I've read the first three chapters of Kate Wilhelm's Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang, and it's quite good so far. Wilhelm deftly sets up the necessary exposition and also plants the seed for what I'm hoping will be an emotional strand that runs throughout the narrative. The book is pretty short: hopefully I'll have a review of this book up in a few days.
