New Reviews: Three of them
January 6, 2004 (10:30 PM) ( link )

ADDED reviews of Lois McMaster Bujold's The Warrior's Apprentice, Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, and Keith Roberts's Pavane.

Bujold's novel was bad, Chabon's great, Roberts's very good.

As I've mentioned earlier, I've had a very, very good run of novels read this year, for reasons I don't understand. This time last year I was complaining about the lack of good reading; now I feel like I'm swimming in it.

I have only two books left that I have yet to review: Walter Wangerin's The Book of the Dun Cow (which is quite strange), and Adam Roberts's On. I'm currently working my way through Dan Simmons's Ilium, a new science fiction novel by him that, like his classic Hyperion, has a sequel that is not yet published. Ilium is quite good--I think I like Simmons's science fiction, even though I found his horror execrable.

I've also abandoned two books that I had been somewhat struggling through: John Crowley's Little, Big and Sheri Tepper's Raising the Stones. I got fairly significantly through each of them before I realized that picking them up was a chore, and so just gave up. Perhaps my new willingness to simply stop reading books I don't like is contributing to the surfeit of good reading I have this year (though there have been some bad books too, so I'll try not to jinx myself now).
