Book Review Links
If you haven't been there already, check out my own book review page, Book Reviews by Steven Wu.
This is a collection of some of the best sites I've found on the Internet for book reviews. Sunglasses (
- shamelessly ripped from Yahoo's site) indicate a site I especially liked.
- Book logs
-
- Blog of a Bookslut: News on books, with some reviews.
- Bookfilter: Random, often quirky book news.
- Ex Libris Reviews: Monthly newsletter (and
well-organized archives) of top-quality, highly readable book reviews from every genre. Ex Libris also has specific author pages for authors whose books have been extensively reviewed on the site (and there are many of them).
- Library of Babel: Chad Orzel's book log.
- Outside of a Dog: Kate Nepveu's book log.
- Roslyn Books: Intermittently updated catching up on books
once read, and fondly remembered.
- Print Journals
-
- Yahoo Directory - Newspaper Book Reviews
- Several newspaper book review sites.
- Atlantic Monthly - Longer, more literate reviews of recent books. Unlike other magazines and newspapers, The Atlantic Monthly's reviews tend to be more like articles about the author, his or her past works, and the implications of the book being reviewed.
- London Review of Books
- Incredibly well-written reviews of a smattering of books. Unfortunately, only a few books reviews from a few subject areas are actually on the web site, but those that are on there are a joy to read. If you've read any of Thomas Scanlon's philosophy, a good representative review is Thomas Nagel's review of Scanlon's book.
- New York Times Book Review
- Superb reviews, with a great archive (but it seems to be denying me access to more and more archived material every day). Lots and lots of reviews, as well as author pages that compile all of an author's reviews on one page. Michiko Kakutani is the bomb.
- Awards Sites
-
- AwardWeb - Focuses mostly on sci-fi/fantasy awards, but also has links to many other literary awards. No reviews here, however.
- Award Winner's Review
- A great site. It lists all the major winners of almost every major sci-fi or fantasy award, and it also has short reviews on most of them. The page's Top 20 is also a good idea: I was introduced to a great many authors (Alfred Bester, Philip K. Dick, Theodore Sturgeon, and Dan Simmons, among others) when I first read this page a long time ago. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be updated much nowadays.
- Locus Index to Sci-Fi Awards - Just what it sounds like: list after list of sci-fi award winners, but no reviews.
- Science Fiction and Fantasy
-
- 162 Classics List
- From a huge survey, as well as from a compilation of almost every poll ever taken, a list of the the top 162 books that people listed as "must-read." I don't entirely agree with all of their top choices, but you can't go wrong with most of these books.
- Aaron M. Ren's Sci-Fi/Fantasy Page - Short but good reviews on a fairly extensive number of books. Helpful "conclusion" to sum up each book's review.
- Belated Sci-Fi Reviews
- Modern-day reviews of classic sci-fi authors like AE Van Vogt, Hal Clement, and Cordwainer Smith. Reviews organized by author, and a great number of books are talked about, though not in any detail. The site avoids any hero worship that might lead people to read books that were once beloved but are now outdated. Also, try this link: Dani Zweig's Belated Reviews.
- Chad Orzel's Book
Reviews
- Well-written book reviews on
a variety of science-fiction and fantasy books. But the best thing about this site is his Library of Babel: A Book Log, which is what my
own log should be (but rarely is).
- Christina Schulman's Sci-Fi Reviews - Excellent reviews on a fairly large number of sci-fi books, though most of the books she reviews I don't recognize (and I have read a whole lot of sci-fi).
- Denver Sci-Fi and Fantasy Book Club - Summaries and ratings (but almost no reviews) on a small selection of sci-fi and fantasy books from throughout the genres' history.
- Evelyn C. Leeper's Book Reviews - Not just sci-fi and fantasy, but mostly those two genres. Ok reviews on a fair number of books.
- Fantastica Daily Reviews - Fairly large number of reviews on fantasy novels (although genre-blending means that many vaguely sci-fi books are also represented). There are also ratings. The reviews are long and fairly interesting.
- Fantasy Finder's Reviews - Decent reviews on a somewhat small and very strange assortment of fantasy novels.
- Fantasy Philes - Just a list of good fantasy novels—no ratings, and no reviews. Not really that useful, although it does classify sub-parts of series into the appropriate story arcs.
- Internet Top 100 Sci-Fi/Fantasy List
- Constantly updated, this is the Internet community's collective opinion about the best sci-fi fantasy novels. I'm currently trying to read as much of this top list as I can, although I think that some of the choices are pretty shallow. On the other hand, the top three are Lord of the Rings, A Song of Ice and Fire, and Ender's Game, and any list that starts with those three can't be bad.
- MEViews - Pretty impressive collection of reviews. Constantly updated too, it seems.
- PostViews
- Short but cogent reviews on a very large number of books. The latest reviews were a while ago, though. Alternate link.
- Raymond's Reviews - Disorganized but well-written reviews on a fair number of sci-fi and fantasy books. These were all originally Usenet posts, which explains their haphazard organization.
- Recommended Fantasy Authors
- Big text file with lots of books, organized by author name. Capsule summaries of all of them. There are somewhat too many reviews here to actually be useful, and almost every book is praised by someone, but I think it's safe to say that a book that is not on this page is probably one not worth reading.
- Recommended SF Readings
- The site whose design was an inspiration to my own. Excellently written reviews on a huge number of books—and at least a mention or an opinion of every major sci-fi and fantasy book that I know.
- Sci-fi Philes - Like Fantasy Philes, just a list of recommended sci-fi authors and books, without ratings or reviews.
- SFBook.com
- A huge number of reviews on sci-fi/fantasy standbys, as well as some more esoteric books. Excellently written and organized.
- SF Site Book Reviews
- Long and excellently written reviews (but no ratings) on a very large number of sci-fi books, including some fairly obscure ones. Unfortunately, it's not quite as extensive as I would like.
- Science Fiction and Fantasy World Reviews - Collections of reader reviews on a large number of books. Most of the reviews aren't very helpful—these are just ordinary readers, oftentimes dashing off brief impressions—but occasionally you find a worthwhile gem posted here.
- Stephanie's Sci-Fi Book Reviews - Capsule reviews and ratings, organized by author, on a large number of sci-fi books. Good site.
- Steve's Hugo Reviews Page - Reviews of almost every Hugo winner from 1953 (with Alfred Bester's The Demolished Man) to the most recent winners. Not complete yet, but a great resource anyway.
- Miscellaneous Sites
-
- Yahoo's Directory of Book Reviews
- Pretty nice directory, though it doesn't include quite as much as I would like.
- ALA Booklist Page - Although this site mostly prints summaries of books, it does mark the books it finds especially worth reading, and each summary contains a bit of editorializing about the book as well. Almost every recently published book can be found here.
- Book Recommendations of Real Folks - Lots and lots of book lists, much like Amazon's own Listmania feature. Many of the lists are also accompanied by brief, capsule reviews. Also, a handy search feature to find which lists feature particular books or authors.
- The Bookshelf Book Reviews - Well-written and decently lengthy reviews on a wide number of genres, both fiction and nonfiction, but not too many reviews for each category (for instance, there are only seven reviews under the Fantasy heading).
- Complete Review
- About 700 reviews, all fairly lengthy and well-written. Another handy feature: the site lists capsule ratings and representative quotations from a wide number of newspaper and magazine reviews of the book in question, so you can see what the general critical opinion of the book is.
- Complete Review Book Review Links - The Complete Review offers capsule reviews on Book Review pages. A good place to look if you're interested in free online book reviews from respected publications; the Review's reviews are also stingy with praise but respectful when it is truly deserved.
- Danny Yee's Book Reviews
- Amazing number of short reviews on a mind-boggling array of subjects. I don't know how this guy reads so much. The web site itself is also well-organized—the search engine is robust, and every review is fully categorized.
- Ed's Internet Book Review
- Huge and well-organized collection of concise but interesting reviews. Not a great deal in any one genre, but just about every genre is touched upon.
- Gary McCath Book Reviews - A small number of fairly high-quality reviews. Books included come under the headings Fiction, Philosophy, Political Issues, Skepticism and Critical Thinking, Music and Arts, and Other. Not too much to see, unfortunately.
- Honest Intellectual Inquiry - Rather than reviewing books (although it does some editorializing), it mostly presents the interesting issues behind books, including many novels. Most of the thoughts, however, center around nonfiction titles.
- Personal Book Lists - Book lists, some with more extensive reviews than others. Not too many lists, though.
- Realbooks
- Collects reviews on recent books from many newspapers and magazines.
- Some Books and Other Good Reads - Very eclectic group of reviews, including sci-fi, fantasy, mainstream, nonfiction, and even graphic novels. There aren't too many reviews, too, and they tend to be very very short (one line at most), but useful for a quick opinion.
- Stephanie's Book Recommendations - Brief nonfiction-book reviews, and plenty of them, on a variety of subjects. She also has a separate science fiction (see "Science Fiction and Fantasy" section above).
- Under the Cover Book Reviews
- Excellent, excellent site, with over 3,700 reviews. Reviews in every genre, fiction or nonfiction, and the reviews tend to be highly literate to boot. Very, very good, and fun to read.
