Definitely the most exciting book in The Belgariad so far. Finally, everybody settles down from his wandering and begins doing things of actual importance. The first half of the book builds up to an awe-inspiring conclusion (which Robert Jordan no doubt remembered when writing The Dragon Reborn). The second half of the book, although it begins pretty slowly, gradually builds momentum as well. Although I still don't like the fact that the Prophecy seems to be controlling everybody, at least every one is beginning to be somewhat more introspective about their role in the Prophecy's predictions.

Also, while the series still shows flashes of humor, this book contains more than a few surprisingly moving scenes, including Garion's visit back to Faldor's farm (and his encounter with Zubrette), Garion's encounter with his cousin, and even some bits with Ce'Nedra. True, it's all pretty melodramatic, but it worked.

Overall, this is my favorite book in The Belgariad thus far, and I look forward to finishing the last one.
